Juneteenth Celebration - June 2024
The celebration began with a gathering call by host and AAL Program Coordinator Margarette Joyner, accompanied by Jeremy Morris, drummer from Richmond, VA. Libation was poured to honor the ancestors, God was called on through prayer and we were given permission, (as in most African villages at gatherings) to continue with the program by the elders that were present. Kim Butler graced us with her melodic voice, Brandon Zachery recited “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” and there was a panel discussion on “What Freedom Means to Me” with panelists Brandon Zackery, BJ Caldwell and Tamia Allen. The 40+ Double Dutch Club was inspiring as was the “Jumping the Broom” demonstration. The children enjoyed custom coloring books, quilt making and receiving books from Books for Youth. Lovn3D Ministries was on hand offering encouragement and our Blacksmiths gave demonstrations throughout the day. We served refreshments in honor of the occasions which consisted of cheerwine strawberry soda, hibiscus tea, red velvet cupcakes & cookies, strawberries, apples, cherries, red grapes and red candy. The overly expression of gratitude from our participants and guests, “This was wonderful! It was awesome!
